This week, for our Blog Love feature, we spoke with 19 year old Alex from Liverpool. She is currently studying a degree in English Language at The University of Manchester and is the face behind fashion and beauty blog ‘The Lippie Lady‘. She is currently working in retail, and has been blogging since September 2015. We asked her how she managed to reach over 1,500 followers on Instagram and which social media platform she likes the best…
1. What made you decide to start up your blog?
This is my favourite question! I’ve always loved everything makeup and beauty related, and when I started working at 16 I wanted to learn how to do makeup properly! I turned to Youtube, and as I began to learn I also began to share my own tips, tricks and advice with family and friends. When I saw these people taking my advice and being happy with the results, I decided I wanted to share my knowledge with more people!
2. Which is your favourite social media platform and why?
This is such a tough question for me… When I first started, I was obsessed with Instagram and I had no clue about Twitter or Snapchat. But now, I love how interactive Twitter is and I’m forever talking on Snap! I suppose I don’t really have a favourite, they all have their strengths and they’re all beneficial to my blog.
3. What’s your favourite thing to write about and why?
I would probably say that foundation is my favourite thing to write about. I don’t buy/try new foundations as often as I do every other makeup product so when I do invest in a new one, it’s a bit more exciting!
4. You have over 1,500 followers on Instagram, what did you do to increase your following?
Honestly with Instagram, I think it’s just about trying to let your personality shine through in your captions. It’s easy with Twitter and Snapchat to let people see the real you and I think people are over the whole “perfect Instagram life” ideal now. So I still post pretty photos that fit with my theme but the captions won’t always be serious!
5. What tips would you give others wanting to push their blogs?
My biggest tip is to just keep going. A couple of months into blogging, I was seeing no growth and was stuck in such a “blog-rut” that I seriously contemplated quitting. But instead I took a couple of weeks off, bought some new goodies to review and when I was ready I got back into it and produced better content than I had previously. I also think talking to other bloggers helps. The blogging community is amazing, especially on Twitter so make sure you follow and interact with others who can offer help and support! If you’re a blogger reading this and you need someone to talk to, you can always drop me a message!
6. Do you have any specific goals for your blog?
My goal is just to inspire people. Obviously, a high following is important but ultimately I want my blog to be a place full of positivity and inspiration!
7. What advice would you give to those starting out?
The best piece of advice I can give to someone starting out is not to beat yourself up too much if it takes a while for your following to grow. Personally, I am my own biggest critic and when I first started I didn’t understand why hundreds of people didn’t initially love my blog. Now I realise that it takes time to learn and improve.
8. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?
I think this has been the hardest question to answer, and my answer is so cliche but the best advice I have ever received was to think before you speak.
9. What beauty products would you recommend?
There’s too many products that I love, I couldn’t possibly list them all! But my current faves are Liz Earle’s Skin Repair Moisturiser, Milani’s 2-in-1 Foundation and Concealer and Sarazaar Cosmetics 24K Gold Highlighting powders in “Diva” and “Frosty Pink”.
10. What’s next for 2016?
I don’t know if it will happen in 2016, but my next big venture is definitely to start a Youtube Channel! I love doing my makeup on Snapchat and I’ve had such a positive response from it that I definitely want to start doing tutorials (I hope you’ll all give me a follow when I do!)
