Blog Love: Salt and Chic
We spoke with 22 year old law student, Amy Liddell, from UK fashion and lifestyle blog Salt and Chic about what made her want to start her blog and how it came to be such a success. She has written relatable posts such as ‘How to do a City Break on a Budget’ and ‘Style on a Student Loan’, covering a wide range of topics including personal style posts, tutorials, photography and travelling tips. With her stunning auburn hair and clear eye for style, Amy is one to watch in the fashion blogging world…
1. What made you want to start blogging about fashion and travel?
I just wanted somewhere that I could call my own space online and post about what I wanted and as I’ve gotten older, travel has become so important to me and I absolutely love sharing my adventures with my readers!
2. It seems like they love to read about your adventures! Which other blogs do you love/draw inspiration from?
Of course Victoria from inthefrow.com is one of my favourite bloggers – her commitment and drive as well as her stunning photography and honest posts makes her such an inspiration. I also love Gracie from graciefrancesca.com – she’s constantly teaching us all a thing or too about body confidence and loving yourself and is an all round beauty!
3. How long have you been blogging for?
I started my blog in June 2013 but really only started taking it seriously in January 2014. I can’t believe how fast the time has gone!
4. You have 18.5k followers on Instagram, what tips would you give other bloggers for increasing their following and creating a good account?
I think that just being completely natural works for me. I’m not a fan of Instagram “themes” and I found that if start worrying about what “fits” with my Instagram, I end up stressing myself out and because the content is more forced, engagement goes down. I think as long as you have high quality, bright photos that show off a little bit of your personality you will have a successful Instagram.
5. What advice would you give to other people starting a blog from scratch?
These days starting a blog can be so difficult. When I started in 2013, there were nowhere near as many blogs or as much pressure on newbies to be a certain “type” of blogger. It sounds cheesy but if you just be yourself you end up posting better content because you are truly passionate about what you’re doing. When I first started out I tried to post the typical beauty posts that I kind of felt like I had to post, even though I wasn’t interested in them at all. When I stopped forcing it and wrote about what I was really passionate about, I found I enjoyed my blog a lot more and it became a huge part of my life.
6. Who are your celebrity style crushes?
I always say this but Suki Waterhouse is my ultimate style crush. She pulls off literally anything and her combinations of girly-grunge and classic 60s dressing just makes me swoon!
7. How often do you post/how frequent should blog posts be in your opinion?
I post almost every day but I think it’s different for each blogger. If you have something you want to post then great, post every single day but I wouldn’t advise forcing a post just so you have something for that day. Readers can easily tell when a post has been forced or it hasn’t been written with passion so it really is unique to each blogger.
8. What’s your favourite social media platform and why?
It’s a tough call between Twitter and Instagram. I love Twitter because it’s so raw and is so full of different personalities and it’s where I’ve met most of my blogging friends and really gotten to know the people behind the blogs I read. Instagram is great but in a different way because you get to see the more picturesque parts of people’s lives and as I love photography anyway I could spend hours scrolling down my feed!
9. Do you have any Spring/Summer 2016 product recommendations?
Jeffree Star’s liquid matte lipsticks have been my go-to these past few weeks. I only have one shade so far but I want to get my hands on so many more because literally each and every time I wear it someone compliments it and asks where it’s from. It doesn’t budge all day even when you’re eating or drinking so is perfect for the warmer days! I’ve also been loving the brand nudi for my body care. I have the coconut sugar scrub and the coconut body butter and they smell divine. They smell like holiday as soon as you open the lid!
10. What are your plans for 2016?
Hopefully I’ll be graduating with my law degree from Durham University in June (eek!) and after that I’m going to be spending a lot of time working on my blog and travelling! I’m starting a feature called #6countries6months on my blog at the beginning of June so look out for that!
All the best of luck, Amy! We can’t wait to see what’s next on Salt and Chic.
