For our Blog Love feature this week, I spoke with lovely Katy Belle, 22 year old digital marketing executive and writer from Northern Ireland. She is currently living in Belfast with her boyfriend, (and occasional outfit photographer) Adam. Her blog covers a variety of topics, including her own personal style, beauty, careers, food and travel.

What made you decide to start up your blog?

I have always been an avid writer, and I suppose I really just wanted my own little space where I could write about anything that took my fancy. At the time I was religiously following a lot of other bloggers, so I decided to give it a try myself – and I haven’t stopped since!

What tips would you give others starting their own blogs or wanting to improve their blogs?

If you’re thinking of starting a blog, my advice is to just do it. You have absolutely nothing to lose, and if you find it isn’t for you, you can move on to something else. But it might just be the best thing you ever do. My blog has given me so many opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible before. If you’re striving to improve your blog, all I can say is work. Work, work, work. Your time and patience is the most valuable thing that you can put into your blog. Don’t get disheartened if you don’t see results overnight.

What are your favourite things to blog about?

I love curating style posts – planning them, shooting them and writing them is a lot of fun. I feel incredibly accomplished when I produce a style post that I’m proud of, because I find it to be my most challenging blog category. I’m very self-critical, and always see room for improvement with my style posts. But I suppose that can only be a good thing!

Which other bloggers inspire you?

I’m absolutely obsessed with Lua from le-happy.com at the moment. Her fashion shots are out of this world, and I would give anything to own her wardrobe. I also love Andini from adventuresofananglophile.com – I’ve been reading her blog for a while now, I just love her quirky fashion sense and her adorable personality.twitter-skincare

What Spring/Summer beauty products do you recommend?

I cannot get enough of the NYX Soft Matte Lip creams, they are so affordable and so many of the shades are perfect for this season. ‘Cannes’ has been my everyday go-to for the last couple of weeks, it’s the most beautiful pink-toned mauve shade. I’ve also been loving highlighters, the Sleek Solstice palette gives the most gorgeous summer glow and it is only £10!

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

One piece of advice that my boyfriend is constantly giving me is ‘you do you’. I’m terribly guilty of comparing myself to others whether it be in terms of blogs, photos, appearances, careers – you name it. He’s always telling me to stop minding what other people are doing and to just focus on what I’m doing, which is so important and I’m just so glad I have him there to tell me when I’m being silly.

twitter-balfern-biker-leather-jacket-all-saints-6Your photography is fantastic – what camera and editing software do you use?

Thank you so much! I use my beloved Olympus E-PL7 for both my blog photos and Instagram photos. Purchasing the 45mm lens for my camera really helped to up my photography game – it really does make all the difference. My boyfriend helps me with my style photos, it has been a massive learning curve for him as he had barely lifted a camera before, but it has actually turned into a hobby for him now! To edit my blog photos I use PicMonkey as it’s so easy to navigate – I’m hopeless with PhotoShop! For my Instagram photos, I actually really enjoy using Instagram’s built-in tools.

What’s your favourite social media platform and why?

It’s a tough call, but it would have to be between Twitter and Instagram. I love Twitter because there are so many opportunities for conversations and engaging. You get a real glimpse of a person’s personality on Twitter, and it’s just a lot of fun. But I adore visuals, so I could honestly scroll through Instagram for hours.

Did you use any specific techniques to build your online following?twitter-what-ive-been-listening-to-222

Honestly, not at all. I’ve definitely learned a few techniques along the way, but I find that building a social media following is all about trial and error. I’ve learned that engagement is key if you want to grow your following. Everyone wants to see personality and follow someone that they can have a chat with!

So what’s next for 2016?

I’m really hoping to start a Youtube channel before the year draws to a close. It’s something I have been intending to do for a long time now, but I just haven’t felt quite ready. I’m determined to get there though, because I have so many content ideas that I’m itching to bring to life on Youtube, so watch this space!
