A blog that has caught my eye as of late is Colours & Carousels. Written by Glasgow girl Charlotte, Colours & Carousels, Charlotte is originally from Manchester and spends her spare time blogging about fashion, beauty, food and more.

Set up in 2010, Charlotte has grown her blog steadily, I sat down with her to talk about her success, and what she loves to blog about most:

Hi Charlotte! Your blog follows a pretty pink and feminine theme- would you consider yourself girly and have you always been this way?

Ha, well I always used to say that I hated pink, but eventually I came to realise that I actually quite like it… I’m by no means a girly girl, but I do enjoy pretty things be it pink or otherwise!

What made you start blogging in the first place? How did your blog journey begin?

I always loved writing – especially persuasive writing – and sharing things I loved with friends on social media or in person, so it kind of came naturally. I’ve always been quite active online and at the time I followed a lot of bloggers, so I decided to give it a shot for myself!

That’s great you felt inspired by other bloggers. What’s your favourite thing to write about?

Food! Always food. I love sharing great recipes I’ve tried, or new restaurants I’ve visited, especially because it means I get to eat lots for “research purposes”…

When press/brands get in touch, are there any rules you follow? How do you decide who to promote and who to avoid?

I only accept opportunities that I’m naturally interested in and think would fit in well with my typical content. At the end of the day, my blog is about things I love and I think are worth sharing so I’ll only promote something if it’s worth shouting about!

One of your categories is blogging tips, do you have any you swear by for aspiring bloggers?

Be yourself! It’s so important to just do what comes naturally and write about what you’re passionate about. It’s blatantly obvious if you don’t really care about the content you’re sharing, so I think the most crucial element of any blog is an interest in the topic.

Any social media tips?

Scheduling is an absolute life saver – especially if you know you’re going to be particularly busy! I like to make sure I have at least 1 or 2 tweets promoting my blog or social network throughout the day, and it really makes a difference. Another useful thing to do is just get involved – chat to people! Twitter chats and general interactions are a great way to build your following, network with like-minded individuals and even make friends too.

Nice tips, thanks! Can you tell us what your attitude is towards fashion, beauty and health? Are you a carefully planned kind of girl, or more experimental?

I wish I was carefully planned, but in all honesty I’m a “hope for the best” kind of person. I like to research lots of options and make informed decisions, and whilst I do have my favourite products I love shopping around and trying new brands!

You’re from around Glasgow- any favourite spots near by? Any travel advice for someone looking to visit?

Glasgow is burger central right now, so be sure to check out Bloc and Bread Meats Bread for some meaty goodness. I’d also recommend spending some time in the West End as it’s a brilliant place to hang about if the weather is playing ball! It has plenty of cute, quirky cafes and Kelvingrove Park is just beautiful.

Do you blog full time or are you following another career path?

I’m taking a year out from university at the moment and working part time in a local fashion store, with the rest of my time being spent on my blog. I don’t think I’d like to blog full time, but it keeps me occupied at the moment whilst I’m waiting to head back to university! I think I’d like to pursue a career in some sort of content creation/blogger outreach/digital marketing position which my blog will hopefully help with.

Finally, where do you hope to take your blog? What are your plans for Colours and Carousels in the future?

Like I mentioned in the previous question I wouldn’t really like to blog full time, but I definitely want to keep it going for as long as possible. I love writing about the things that excite me, so there’ll be plenty more of that to come!
